The nature of we humans is to be enquirers and searchers. Part of living in a free society is the ability to ask questions, free enquiry and expression being banned or severely restricted in dictatorships and authoritarian states. Whether knowing the answer to all questions necessarily makes us happier is a different question. I find that my dog is happy more or less constantly. He has no capacity to ask questions or reason in the way we humans do. He lives in the moment and is, no doubt happier than many humans. There is an old question about whether it is better to be a contented pig or a discontented philosopher. I think on balance I would rather be a discontented philosopher asking questions. However there is something to be said for being the contented pig with no capacity to ask questions but supremely happy in one’s own way. Kevin
